Recently a Joint Commission inspector informed our facility Home Health department that they cannot take hospital glucose meters into patient's homes and that the staff will have to use the patient's personal glucose meter. The inspector also said that the staff will need a competency evaluation yearly for the glucose test in the home. I was asked to assist in developing the competency challenge. There patients have numerous brand glucose meters! At this time all I can come up with is a checklist and a quiz covering the steps to perform the fingerstick and checking that the supplies are not expired. Does anyone else have any type of competency in place for Home Health using various devices to run a glucose?
