Glucose Control Revised Exp. Date. Labeling

What have you found to work best for labeling Glucose QC with the revised expiration date?  We are no longer allowed to use tape on pretty much anything. Writing the date with a sharpie is ok, however sometimes the information wears off.  I'm looking at waterproof and self laminating labels as an optionso you could wipe the surface off if needed.

I have small labels made that have fields for date expires and initials. They are bright yellow and easy to see that the reagent has been re-dated. A sharpie works best on them and does not rub off. We order them through a local printer (Bayside Printed Products). I distribute these out to the POC areas so the staff have these on hand to label the reagents as they open new bottles.

Kellie what size label do you use?

The label is 5/8 inch by 1.5 inches.

What is the difference between putting a label on the QC vs putting a piece of tape over permanent marker to keep it from rubbing off? A label is just another form of tape?

I have been using a small avery label and then cover with transparent tape (aka - high tech laminating material) THis prevents smearing or wearing and I have not had a problem with it because if needed the tape can be wiped down with whatever cleaner is used.

Chere I agree.  It's all sticky.  I hope that our Inspector says yes in this circumstance it is ok to apply tape over the date.  If not then we will do the best we can with using a permanent marker.  The Inspector may have suggestions that we can use too.

I can see not using tape on other items in the hospital that are around for long periods of time. But these QC and strip bottles generally don't last that long and certainly not longer than 90 or 180 days. Unless you can come up with a permanent marker that is truly permanent the clear tape is the best option. Inspectors need to be more helpful in finding areas your program needs to be beefed up in and less picky about the sticky.
