Normal Patients for Reference Range Verification

Hi all,
How do you find your normal population when verifying instruments/ranges?
How do you ensure your “normals” aren’t on medication that can interfere with your testing?
We requested 20 normal patients from our core lab as established by their analyzer but that our results were unsatisfactory for our director.
Thanks for helping this POCT newbie.

Depends on the test. For ACT-LR I drew 20 of our lab employees that were not on any medication as testing had to be performed right away. For the ACT + our perfusionists draw a baseline ACT before they give Heparin. We used the baseline results of 20 - 30 patients to establish that normal range. For other chem/heme testing we get volunteers from employee pool and on special occasions we asked outpatients if they would mind an extra tube to be drawn to help with our study to improve patient care. Most were fine with that. Our phlebs are good at choosing the patients that are here for annual checkups vs those who are having specific issues. As far as the medication issue...there will always be outliers that you can exclude.
Hope this helps,
Lois
Thanks! It’s just for a heme analyzer
