My department was just asked to look into POC HIV Testing, does anyone run this test? What kits do you use? What issues do you run into?
Thanks in advance!

We use Abbott/Alere Determine. It's 4th gen so detects p24, simple to use, easy to read. Biggest issue is that Abbott is experiencing a supply constraint and are limiting shipments.
We are using Abbott/Alere Determine at our facility. Right now, the kit is backordered.
We use the Alere/Abbott product also but because of the backorder, our system has decided to move to the ChemBio Rapid HIV kit until the issue is resolved. ChemBio only detects HIV1&2 Abs and has waived (whole blood) or nonwaived options (using 2.5uL plasma or serum - yes that's 2 point 5!)
Has anybody heard when Alere will be back up to speed?
Hi Lillian, how does the ChemBio compare with the Alere/Abbott product from your experience?
I asked our distributor on the status of the backorders and she is reaching out to Abbott about it so hopefully I will get some info on it.
Thanks!
Hi Anna,
As far as procedures and ease of use go, we in the lab prefer the Alere product. The test strip is placed into its own disposable tray, 50uL sample is added (followed by Chase Buffer if whole blood is used) to the sample pad and the test is read at 20 min, but not after 30min. With the ChemBio Sure Check kit, there are more parts and manipulations involved. You can google the product insert to see what I mean. Results available at 15 (but not more than 20) min. Specificity/sensitivity are comparable between the 2 kits. Both have waived and nonwaived options.
Hope that helps!
