Using eVAS for Pass/Fail Determination on iSTAT/RALs
I am looking into utilizing Pass/Fail determination on the iSTAT which requires the current eVAS to be uploaded into our RALs middleware.
The eVAS is updated whenever a new lot of cartridge or control is released and made available on the Abbott website, but there is no notification for when it is updated. New lots cannot be used until the eVAS is updated on the iSTAT device.
The problem is that we do not currently have testing locations notify POCT when they receive a new lot of cartridges, and the concern is that a testing unit could receive a new lot of cartridges but not be able to use it because the eVAS was updated. Technical support cannot provide any information of when or how often the eVAS is updated/new lots released.
I am worried that even with a daily (M-F) check, if it is updated after hours or on a weekend our testing locations may not be able to perform patient testing.
Does anyone have experience using the Pass/Fail determination on the iSTAT who may be able to provide some guidance?
Thanks! -Amanda

Hello,
The evas file only needs to be updated when you receive new lots of controls (and new CLEW). I would think you would be okay checking the evas on the Abbott website every couple weeks and ensure you have the latest one uploaded in RALS. After awhile you
will be able to get a “feel” for how often you need to check. We do get the shipments directly to POC, it is easy for us(we have forgotten though). The P/F is nice for end users. Hope this helps and good luck,
Patty

Hi Patty,
Doesn't the eVAS need to be updated with new lots of cartridges also? The controls are easier because the information is available online, but they od not release information of new lots of cartridges.
How often do you update the eVAS?
Thank you!
-Amanda
My facility also get shipments directly to POC and then the cartridges are picked up and stored by the end users in their departments. The eVAS typically is issued mid-month and I've made it a habit to check for a update every couple of weeks. How often are controls being ran at your sites?
I have forgot to check the eVAS and not updated it right when it comes out. I have yet to have an issue with being unable to run a lot of cartridges on my ISTATS because of that issue.
The issue arises when a new lot of QC/CALVER is not put into RALS. That's when you will not be able to run the QC/CALVER. I hope this helps! Good luck!
Kammy
Hi Kammy, iSTAT controls are being run monthly on representative devices in each of the testing locations. The locations receive the shipments of QC and cartridges directly. When users receive a new lot, it shows up in RALs with the date the lot number was scanned into the device as the expiration date in RALs. We are trying to avoid asking the testing locations to notify POCT every time they get a new lot.
Thanks! - Amanda
The eVAS for controls is an excellent way to have nursing units manage running controls without me having to nag them. It is part of their expectations if they want to perform testing.
eVAS is difficult since it updates with no rhyme or reason. I try to check at least weekly. But just because I check it on Tues., doesn't mean it won't be updated on Wed. I have brought this up any time Abbott wants to know what they could do better. I
will continue to bring it up.
Have a safe night tonight and a great next year!
