Hello Everyone,
Just curious for those who are using Radiometer ABL 90. What are the PROS and CONS?
Any insight for other blood gas analyzers out there as well? Thank you

Hi,
We currently have 5 ABL90 Flex analyzers and will be adding 3 more iABL90 Flex+ in the next month.
Pros: Super fast results (36 seconds)
Easy to run
Only 2 parts to replace (sensor cassette and solution pack)
Interfaced to LIS/Epic
Runs LQC every 8 hours automatically which follows the full path so no IQCP needed
Correlates perfectly with the ABL835s in the main lab
Has a capillary mode (we don't use it, somewhat complicated)
Automatic lockout if QC or calibration fails
If using Aqure software, remote monitoring available (even from home if you can get on your hospital network)
Cons: Expensive to run for low volume areas
Sensor cassettes and solution packs only good for 30 days.
Sometimes takes quite a while for new sensors to come up, needs conditioning
Following as we're also thinking of the ABLs. We have the 90s in the lab and had planned in the future to put these at POC but now it appears that will happen sooner than later.
They won't be going everywhere unfortunately as some locations just don't have the volume so I'll have to still keep istat in some locations.
Interested in those who have these in the cath lab - have you successfully talked them into using co-ox on these and eliminated the AVOX? They love the AVOX as it's so quick but the IQCP, QC, etc make it seem unnecessary.
Thank you Reine. It does not have IQCP too right? Did you guys purchased extra batteries? The rep said it only has 1 hour battery life if not plugged.
Hi Donna,
No IQCP needed because it runs liquid QC automatically every 8 hours (you can program start times) and multiple calibrations throughout the day. Cathlab has moved over to taking all the results for FO2Hgb from the ABL90. So only 1 analyzer to maintain an operator list on and results automatically download. We gave them 6 different choices for panels/individual tests. They get results in 36 seconds so they're happy with that (even though I think the AVOX is faster). One less analyzer to get competencies on too.
We did not get batteries, since our analyzers will be stationary and always plugged in. There is no battery life once it's unplugged (that was in the ABL80 but not the ABL90s) It's kind of a pain though if we do have to unplug them because the startup time is about 15-20 minutes. Batteries also makes them very heavy and a couple inches taller because the battery sits under the unit. I heard that it has wireless capability but we have never investigated that.
