Apt Test

Hello!

This might be an oldie...does anyone remember the Apt Test/Alkali denaturation test?  Is anyone still doing this test?  At the bedside??

We have an...experienced...(new to us) OB who wants to perform this test at the bedside on vaginal bleeding.

This would be an LDT correct?  Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Our hospital system does still perform this test but not at the bedside. It is performed in main laboratory only. Our sample sources are stool or vomitus from baby. The LDT or complexity is most likely not waived although I have not read further into it.

Wow, a blast from the past! I can't imagine having this done at POC--it uses NaOH as a reagent. It would definitely have to be done in the lab. I don't know what the complexity is--but since it's very manual, I would imagine high complexity. I couldn't find any information on the FDA website that has the CLIA classifications.
