I just went live with Sofia 2 for Strep A in the ED. I have Telcor as my middle ware
Laura can you explain the workflow?
What does Nursing scan as the Patient ID?
the Patient barcode which is generated by the HIS- same barcode that's matches the patient wrist band
Do you use the Sophia in the Laboratory to do any testing or is it only used as a POC device?
we do use the sofia in the lab for flu testing, however those devices are not interfaced.
the tech manually enter those results , because its under the "Micro" area of department, even tho the test is run in chemistry. Our LIS is Soft
We use it in the Lab for Flu, RSV and Rapid Strep A testing, and also as POC in the Pediatric ED for Rapid Strep A only. Unfortunately, our Sofias are not interfaced and both lab and POC results are entered manually by the respective operators. In the lab, staff enter the results in Sunquest, and in the hospital units, nurses will enter the results in Epic using the Enter/Edit function. Nurses are instructed to scan the patient's wrist band or manually enter the medical record on the instrument.
We use the Sofia analyzer in the ED for strep screens and have it connected to RALS and Epic. We love it because if the result of the test is negative, Epic reflexively orders the confirmatory culture. The ED staff only have to send the second swab to the laboratory. It solved the missing confirmatory culture problem for us.
We do have the Sofia analyzers in the laboratory in Micro for strep screens, flu's and RSV testing, but they are not connected to RALS. The results have to be entered manually. They are envious of the ED in this regard!
Linda did your facility try to interface the Sophia meters in the lab?
All of our Sophia meters are in the laboratory Micro Dept. We tried to interface them through TELCOR but could not because of the Sample ID. The entire workflow would have to change. Now they are considering adding an ADT/Orders interface to TELCOR and I am not convinced that will work either. Trying to convince them to interface through Data Innovations like all our other Lab analyzers.
No, we have not tried interfacing the Sofia analyzers in the lab. We don't use the order number field and it hasn't caused any problems for us. I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to as the sample ID field.
Hello Linda,
Mother always told me don't ask how old a person is or if a women's pregnanct and the most importantly how much something costs. Bless her heart but I'm going to ask what the price was to interface the Sofia analyzers you are currently uring. I'm interested in the cost to connect.
We have multiple analyzers across our facility, main lab, Express Care Units and physcian office practices. Currently Running RALS middleware and Meditech EMR.
Thank you
Amanda Casavant
Hi Amanda,
We use RALS for our Sofia connectivity. I believe the best way to determine the cost for your facility would be to obtain a price quote so all of your variables would be taken into account.
My plan is to treat the Sophia meters like any other laboratory instrument (since we don't use it as a POC device) and run it through Data Innovations (DI). One interface connection (currently have 13 meters) for all facilities with rules built in DI to route the results.
