Covid-19 testing and CARES Act Questions

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing challenges with compliance/workflow for the additional demographic questions (i.e is this the patient's first test, is the patient pregnant, etc) for CARES Act? For our areas using the Abbott IDNow Covid-19 test, we have an instrument-generated-order system (using Rals, Sunquest, and Epic), which means there is no orderable test for the provider to enter responses to the CARES Act questions allowing for automatic transmission to our state.
Has anyone come up with any creative solutions to this? We are debating switching to a solicited order, or having someone do a lot of manual data entry after the fact to be compliant--neither is an ideal solution.

Hi Jennifer,
We are using the Abbott IDNOW COVID 19 test as well. The instruments are not interfaced so we manually have to enter the POC COVID results in EPIC. We had to have a POC order code built in EPIC specifically for the Abbott test. Regarding the CARES Act questions, our EMR folks built the questions to populate as soon as the order is placed. We have done the same with our other COVID tests (PCR, serology, etc.) I have attached a screenshot of what this looks like.
Hope this helps :)

Hi Jennifer-
I asked the same question a few weeks back and didn't get a great answer. I think we're all struggling with this.
We use Epic, RALS, and Sunquest for POC. Because the test is unsolicited, there was no way to get the answers to the questions to drop into Sunquest(at least that we could figure out) , so we could not send the answers in an HL7 format generated from Sunquest like the state wanted. We ended up calling the state and they agreed to take the report in a hard copy format. We built the questions into Epic and had a report built that would pull the result from the patient chart and the answers to the questions. The order that we built in Epic was a placeholder order that doesn't leave the chart. It's more like a nursing order. The report that is generated by Epic auto-sends every AM. It pulls all the info from Epic and not the LIS.
We only do this for POC testing. The test performed in the lab is different. Theirs is sent from Sunquest in HL7 format.

Hi Raychel,
When these orders are placed in Epic, are they POC orders, or traditional lab orders?
For the Abbott COVID19 test, the EPIC order code begins with POC followed by the number ex: POC160, so I'm thinking POC orders. I am pretty green when in comes to EPIC
Thank you for your response! We have considered that option but our state (Illinois) has said they do not want a file---they want it all transmitted directly.
That means it is an unsolicited order--test is done and transmitted, then gets ordered and resulted in the LIS. I am not aware of any way to have AOE questions with POC orders. We send our results through Telcor middleware, then go to Sunquest and then to Epic EMR.
Wow what a mess! So far no COVID at POC here but seems like a challenge for you all! Ivy
