Fern Testing

A few months ago I was successful in eliminating pH nitrazine and Fern testing from our Labor and Delivery department and get them to collect and send samples for Amnisure to the main lab. However, now they want to get the Fern testing back in order to "double check" results when there are doubts.
For places that have Fern testing, is your Point of Care Testing department oversee the Provider Performed Testing? If so, how do you handle training, competency and all requirements?

Our provider support department oversees provider competency for microscopy. They complete and online assessment each year for whichever microscopy they perform

What will the providers do if the FERN interpretation does not match the Amnisure?

Hello Kelly,
Does Ferning fall under your POC license? Nursing does all our ferning as moderately complex testing and is under the POC license.
Our "paper" training and competency is all on line. My maternity nurse educator is certified as a trainer and she does all the hands on. She forwards all hands on results so that I have a record.
POC pulls a report from EPIC for result review and to make certain those who performed testing that month are up to date with competency.
I am curious why they feel the need to "double check" the Amniosure. Are they double checking negatives or positives? I assume this is providers are want the double check.
If the correlations between ferning and Amnisure matched, maybe they just need to have a review of the results.
I was successful at pulling the Fern test from the floor and having the lab do it. The doctors were not happy about it, but the nurses' were. They didn't have to do competency, etc. Also, the scope they were using wasn't a great one and they didn't want to have to purchase another one.
We have done it this way for a couple of years and it is going well.
We also moved our Amnisure testing to the lab as well.
Sherilyn,
Which CLIA type is your 'POC license'? and do you mean mid-level practitioners who report through nursing do the FERN tests?
Thanks!
We have a PPMP license for Fern for several clinics, MDs, DOs, and NPs are testing personnel, POCCs do non-waived competency.
