Avoximeter Calibration Verification Kit

Hi all--for those using the Avox, what do you use for Cal-Ver? I usually order CVC 223 Co-Oximeter Calibration Verification Controls from RNA medical 2x per year. I ordered at the beginning of December and the ship date has now been pushed to March. Is there a good alternative you can recommend that includes tHb and O2 Hb? I don't need COHb or MetHb.

Thanks!

That's normally what I use as well, I guess I just lucked out that I had a kit to use in December! I know that IL has their own products now. QC for sure and possibly calver? Maybe reach out to your rep or I have a contact if you need.

Thanks Danyel, I'd love if you could give me a contact. I'm not in touch with mine frequently and seem to have lost his business card. My email is: ruth.harmala@mghs.org.

I couldn't find any cal-ver kits on IL's website, but I found Eurotrol has a kit. Does anyone here use the Eurotrol kit?

I am interested in this as well. I am in the same situation and am having difficulty finding an alternative to the CVC223.
Any help is much appreciated!

I am in the same boat with my kit on backorder.
I was recently TJC inspected, and the inspector pointed out that our 6 month calibration verifications for iSTATs were really not required since the iSTAT is considered manufacturer-calibrated.
The Avoximeter 1000E's manual specifically states under its Calibration chapter that the 1000E is a factory-calibrated instrument.  Ours have never been re-calibrated or sent for repair.
So, I'm considering discontinuing 6month cal ver studies on the Avox (we would still perform it as part of new-instrument studies).  Heresy, I know.
Curious if anyone sees an obvious problem with this change?  I don't see that this would conflict with TJC, TN state, or CLIA/CMS.

I discontinued i-STAT Cal-Ver except upon validation of a new handheld based on the same recommendation from a TJC inspector. However, with the Avox, we don't do proficiency testing. So in lieu of that I perform 6 month studies: Cal-Ver and correlation with the main lab blood gas analyzers. I see the point with calibration though. If it really is a factory calibrated instrument is there any reason to do a Cal-Ver? I'm not sure. Our biomed department does occasionally open them up to clean them when blood gets inside. I haven't had a surveyor mention anything about cal-ver yet on the Avox, but we are due for inspection soon. I would have to write a new IQCP because my 6 month cal-ver is written into that.

I have iSTATs that are under COLA and we were told the same things a few years ago. I discontinued then and haven't had a problem. It makes good sense. My other 2 sites are under CAP so I don't have much hope that I would get away with it even though it's basically meaningless.

I know that Radiometer and Siemens have their Cal Ver kits that contain COOX analytes.  When push comes to shove, you can try running those kits.

Anyone have a IQCP for the Avox they are willing to share? We have a few in the cath labs that have been there from when I took over as POCC. We are inspected by CAP.

THANK YOU!!

We use the same product for our AVOX 1000e instruments but our next use isn't until April. Thanks for the heads up on backordering. We do currently use the Eurotrol HCT Cal Ver, but the one we use is specific for epoc Blood Analysis Systems. And...we use the Siemens Ca Ver as well...the one we use is specific for RapidLabs or RapidPoint Blood Gas Systems. According to CAP there are alternatives for what can be used in Cal Ver, see CAP standard POC.08150. Would it be possible to verify against another main lab system with patient samples?

But alas...The statement about Cal Ver criteria not applying to devices that do not allow user calibration. See CAP standard POC.08300. True that the instrument would definitely fall in this category. I might ponder that a little more!!

Eurotrol now has CueSee CO-OX controls available for your point of care testing needs with all co-oximetry testing analyzers.  Choose from two kit options both of which provide clinically significant measurable levels of tHb, FO2Hb, FCOHb, and FMetHb.  Please visit our website www.eurotrol.com or contact me for more information!
