Expiration Dates on Kits/Supplies different

I have a question.  We have a Strep Kit with one expiration date on the outside of the kit and  the actual cartridge used for the test has a different expiration date.  Any idea why?
I asked the site to let me know the expiration dates of al the supplies in the kit to see if one of them has the same date as the kit. Does the manufacture just default to the earliest date? ( cartridge, reagent and control swabs)?

Anastasia, we've had the experience you describe with Strep kits.
Currently our operators get confused with our WT POC Molecular kits because the two reagent pouches have different expiration dates.
Manufacturers have told us to use the earliest expiration date on any component supplied in the kit. And not to interchange reagents between kits 'in order to extend any expiration date'.

The expiration date of the kit is the earliest expiration date of any of the component of that kit. As Peggy said don't interchange the reagents. That's a CAP regulation.

Tech support/vendor here.  Every component has its own expiration date- kits always go by the shortest so you don't get short dated.  The CAP requirement is that they shouldn't be interchanged, but in some circumstances components aren't lot specific, and it doesn't matter.  If you call the manufacturer, they may be able to give you documentation to that effect.
