StatSensor Meter by Nova for Creatinine testing

We are looking into purchasing a POC creatinine device for our Cancer Center. I am most interested in the Nova StatSensor meter, but have not used any POC instruments from this company. Anyone have this meter? Have any thoughts or feedback on it? Accuracy? Easy of use?
Other option is getting an iSTAT and using the creatinine cartridge.

Keep in mind that the StatSensor is not waived. The i-Stat if you draw whole blood tube is waived.

Others in our Health System use the NOVA Creat and we use the i-STAT creat. We have gone back and forth during standardization discussions on the pros and cons of both:

NOVA CREAT meter
  • Pro:
    • Specimen is capillary finger stick samples
  •  Con:
    • Moderately complex (need to follow CAP rules, collect diplomas 6mo comps in addition to initial training and annual comp with 6 elements; need annual comparison testing between all devices and laboratory if creat testing is on same site, temp monitoring etc.)
    •  Call POC creatinine a “creatinine screen” - it doesn’t correlate well especially at the higher end. Used as a decision making tool, not to monitor creatinine.
    • Need Proficiency testing, linearity, CLIA waiver at each site
    • Strip lot to strip lot variability—recommended to perform 20 patient comparison (sequester 6 month supply—use that data for 6 month comparison)
i-STAT
  • Pro:
    • Waived if run off tube (could be under TJC)
  •  Con:
    • Expensive
    • Cartridges are refrigerated, room temp expiration 14 days
    • Comparison issues noted when glucose or lipemia is high (Does not compare well to lab analyzers using the Jaffe Method)
    • Staff must be able to perform phlebotomy (Who will keep competency on that skill?)

We do not currently use the Nova meter for creatinine testing; we use the ISTAT. However, we do use the Nova glucose and lactate meters. They work great. We get results within 6-13 seconds (depending on the test). Nova Biomedical also has great customer service.

Jean Roper - Unfortunately our nursing staff do not perform venous blood draws so we are looking at Nova due to the ease of them being able to test via fingerstick.

We use the Nova StatSensor creatinine meters.  I find the meter is easy to use and it is generally well liked.  Staff like that it is able to give both the Creatinine and GFR results on the screen.  You do have to enter patient age, sex and race if you select GFR  testing, but results are displayed on the screen in 30 seconds.  It is non-waived so there are extra regulatory requirements.  I don't know if they offer wireless creatinine meters (I don't believe they do), ours all have a wired docking station so the meter must be docked to transmit results to the EMR.

It depends on whether it can be moderate complexity or if you need it to be waived.  We had looked at the Nova StatSensor for Crea, but sadly could not go forward because it is not CLIA waived.  My facility has 79 of the Nova StatStrip Glucose meters and I could not be happier.  We came from Accu-Chek, and the technology, ease of use, durability, and customer service with Nova in general is far superior.  Nova really needs to get the StatSensor CLIA waived; they're missing a great opportunity.  We use the i-STAT and Crea cartridge at our Imaging Centers and really have no issues with it.  To use it in a waived setting, the specimen does have to come from a green top tube, which is a little cumbersome and unfortunate.  It would be ideal if it could come straight from the syringe, but we have to connect a transfer device to the IV adapter, fill a green top, then add a dropper device to the green top to dose the Crea cartridge.
