Fecal occult blood- digital exam specimens

There have been conversations at our sites regarding whether or not a digital rectal exam (DRE) specimen is acceptable for the different types of fecal occult blood cards/devices.
Beckman Hemoccult does not indicate this type of specimen is acceptable-no procedure other than a bowel movement specimen in their package insert.
Immunochecmical fecal occult blood test by McKesson- they state they don't support this type of specimen.- not indicated in their package insert.
Hemaprompt does support DRE as it is indicated in the package insert.
Has anyone heard anything different?
Also, if using DRE for colorectal screening, the American Cancer society states, "An FOBT done during a digital rectal exam in the doctor's office (which only checks on stool sample) is not enough for proper screening, because it is likely to miss most colorectal cancers."
Of course, there may be other reasons other than checking for colorectal cancers. That's why there are 2 different CPT codes. CPT 82272 is used for other than colorectal neoplasm screening.

This is fascinating. Our ER is usually using digital rectal exam sample smears to evaluate for GI bleeding, not cancer.
