Hello everyone,
We have currently use the pHydrion paper from Micro essentials for body fluid pH testing. Our procedure states to check the paper each time before patient testing and make sure it is about a 6, as a quality check, once we have done our shipment check and put them into use. I am having trouble finding this information to verify its accuracy and where it was possibly cited from, as I have checked the references on the procedure, and it is not stated in either. Does anyone else use this paper and have a quality check that is done before each patient use? And if so what is your guidelines that state that the pH paper is still ok to use for patient testing once it has been opened, and every time there after?

Hi Heidi, we use this same paper at the Point of Care. We use the 4.5 - 7.5 and the 0 - 13 versions of the paper. For the 4.5 - 7.5 we have staff perform one level of QC on a weekly basis to ensure the paper is still reading results correctly. For the 0 - 13 the staff perform two levels of QC weekly. We also ensure staff keep these in a closed drawer or cupboard (away from light), and away from fumes such as bleach. We have noticed the paper will change color over time before its expiration date, but we have noticed that QC still passes even if the original color of the paper is changed slightly. We use Quantimetrix Dipper controls for the QC material because we use those Dipper controls for pregnancy QC and urine dipstick QC as well. But If you're just needing pH QC, there are buffer solutions that can be used.
We test our QC paper each day of patient testing, which for us means before each patient use because we do not do body fluid pH testing very often. I would look at your IQCP to see why they chose before each patient test instead of daily or weekly.
