Meter to test volume ratio

Does anyone have any data on a benchmark for the number of meters per test volume or number of patients? I just wonder what the national average is for a tertiary+ care hospital.

When I oversaw glucometer change/implementation at our facility a few years ago, I spoke with each manager and some staff in each unit in order to figure out exactly how many we needed. It was a lot of work, but I'm glad I did; we needed many more than we had. Be sure to include extras for your clinical educators, POCC, and also extras on hand for when staff break/bloody up the meters so that they aren't short while waiting on a replacement.
To add to this, what you are assuredly trying to keep in check: Some depts. want a gross excess of meters. I've had requests to add POC meters in every patient room. I remind them of the additional costs in hardware, licensing fees, QC, support, and supplies each meter brings and if that doesn't bring the requests to a reasonable level I escalate it up the leadership chain.
