Blood Gas Instrument Information

Our RT department is due for an instrument upgrade soon, and they are in the early stages of shopping around to see what will be the best fit.  They currently have GEMs and have looked at Epoc devices (we already have Epoc devices that I oversee via POC for certain areas of our hospital), and now they are looking into the Radiometer.  Can those of you that use it provide me with your Pros and Cons?  Is oversight (including training and competency assessment, initial validations, and 6 month studies) provided by your POC department, RT, or a combination?  I was told that the Radiometer is considered a Point of Care device so it would most likely fall under me, but I wanted to see how you all handle it.  Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.  They are in the very early stages of shopping around, but I want to gather as much information as I can early on.

Also, for those that use the Epoc for RT, are you using another device for Co-Ox?  If so, what are you using and what are the Pros/Cons?

Thanks!

I can't say enough good about the GEM5000s. We had Radiometer before that. I also personally used Rapidpoints and iStats for gas analysis almost 20 years ago. I looked at the newest Rapidpoint and also Nova's gas analyzer last year. Abbot wasn't considering onboarding new gas customers at the time.

Feel free to call me with any questions about any of these devices.

I second what Ken said. We have GEM 5000s, and are going to move to the 7000s. I have previous experience with both Radiometers and RapidPoints as well, and also with handheld blood gas instruments being used by RT. I'm happy to chat about these instruments, and also about how our laboratory program handles RT testing across our system.

I have to agree with both before me. When I started in POC we had Epoc for blood gas and AVOX for Co-Ox. We transitioned to GEMS and it was the best decision. I am now on the IT side instead of in POC and one of our facilities is actually about to be one of the first sites to get the 7000s. We have successfully swapped 4 sites from Rapidpoint or Radiometers to GEMS during the past year.
