Can Surgical Technologists perform Moderate Complexity Testing at the POC

Under Florida law, can Certified Surgical Technologists perform moderate complexity testing (eg. Activated Clotting Time) *at an alternate-site location (ie. Surgical Services dept) if training and competency assessment are completed? These individuals are certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting but certification is voluntary.   Note:  Florida does not require licensure or certification for Surgical Technologists.

I'm interested to hear what the folks from Florida say. From a CLIA standpoint, yes they can. You will need a copy of their High School diploma or GED, plus initial training, 6 month, 12 month and annual thereafter competency assessment that includes all 6 elements of competency. I know Florida, like New York and a handful of other states, have state laws that are more strict than CLIA.

Refer to 59A-3.242,  Laboratory, Radiology, and Respiratory Services.  Refer to link below.  Look on page 2,  #6 (d).  Surgical Techs are not listed.

We looked into anesthesia Tech and surgical techs.  They did not meet the educational requirements. We have 8 points of competency now (NYS).  However, Radiology Techs in the Cath Lab and IR qualify and used to use the i-Stat in those areas, due to staffing only have the RN's preforming i-stat testing.
