Glucose meters

We are suddenly being "dropped" by Abbott, unless we continue to pay list price.
Apparently, a small hospital (260-270) is not worth Abott's trouble of negotiating a new contract.
AND this is a quote from the Contracting Manager.  Buyer beware!

We are looking at Roche and the Nova meter in the upcoming week.

Please list your pros and cons if your institution is using either of these.
Nova also wants to give us their NovaNet which connects to Unipoc.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi! We have Nova and I'm sure you know that they are the only ones approved for use in a critical ill population.  That being said, I've never loved dealing with their sales team in the past but the product is good.  We have had significant issues with their IFU where cleaning wipes and instructions are concerned BUT we just found out that they have a new meter coming out and the cleaning/disinfecting language is MUCH better than it used to be.  All in all, I would stay with Nova if presented with an option to change.  Sorry Abbott isn't taking care of the little guy.  Mary

Good Morning! We have Nova and it is user friendly. The only issues we have is with the wireless nova. I view the wireless as a bonus if it actually works but still rely on docking to ensure results cross.

I'm with Mary on this one. My hospital system uses the Accu-Chek and I am currently pushing hard for us to transition to the Nova meters.

Hi! We also have NOVA and everyone loves it.  We have had no issues, so I would say NOVA!

I agree, I use Nova, 500+ bed inpatient hospital. Staff like them and I have no complaints. I have the Colorado sales contact if you need it.

Nova is the way to go, especially with the new CLIA regs going into effect. I have never had issues with replacements either. NovaNet is needed if you are going to interface the instrument. If you are an ISTAT user, I compare NovaNet to DE. The one downside is that you do need to program the controls and strips into NovaNet.

I am also in the process of looking into the Nova and currently have Roche. Both meters seem pretty comparable aside from the Nova's FDA approval for the critically ill and that is one of my biggest reasons for switching. I have concerns about the NovaNet software, the sales rep. said using RALs with the NovaNet that it would just be a pass through and nothing else. A lot of people mention having to program controls and strips in NovaNet, does anyone use NovaNet with RALs and can confirm it is just a "pass through"?

We have had the Nova glucose meters for 10+ years and have no major complaints. We have Telcor with NovaNet and we do have to program strip lot numbers and QC lot numbers/ranges in NovaNet before they will work in the meters. But we sequester lot numbers so its really manageable. We have ADT come from Epic --> Telcor--> NovaNet --> meters and it works pretty slick! We maintain the operator privileges in Telcor and they transfer into NovaNet and down to the meters as well. All in all, we love Nova. Have had good customer service for both the devices and NovaNet. We are also such a large hospital system, there is no way we could have a glucose meter that doesn't allow for critically ill patients.

We have RALS and NovaNet.  The only thing I do with NovaNet is enter the new lot# of strips, controls, and urine pregnancy test kits in addition to entering the new lots in RALS.  It is very quick and easy to enter in NovaNet.

Used NOVA Statstrip for 14 years.  First had wireless totes and then wireless meters.  No major issues.  Our wireless connectivity has alwasy been good.  Phone to NOVA is a real person with an immediate transfer - found their customer service excellent. Approved for all sample type for all patients - need no "critically ill" definition / policy. Accurate results that match the lab very well.  GO NOVA all the way.   CPT code is higher reimbursement due to the FDA clearance.  Due to corporate contract, now use Abbott Freestyle Precision Pro but miss my NOVA Statstrip.

We currently have Abbott meters; hope we don't hear that message!  For Nova, how do you all manage dating the vials with the 90 day expire?

another +1 for Nova.   We've been with the Nova Statstrip glucometers and Prime Plus for >2 years..  I've never dealt with a more up-front easy to deal with analyzer company before.

Diane, the Nova glucose QC vials are dated for 90 days.  The lab manages the swap out and dating of them.  The Nova glucose strip vials are dated with a 180 day open expiration date.  It is a culture change from the individually wrapped strips to get the floor staff to date them, one that took a while to get staff to routinely do.  We do weekly rounding and have great "buy-in" from nursing leadership with this.

We recently switched from Roche to Nova.  Our staff is not happy.  Roche is more robust and reliable.  I have had to replace several Nova Stat meters already.  It just seems a little cheesy after using the Inform II.

Tammy, do you know if you have the older version of meters or the newer version. Nova told me that just came out with a brand new model and I would be getting that version, hopefully that will help.

I'm not sure??  We went live March 2023.
