Hello all
Can organizations using the NOVA Biomedical StatStrip meters tell me how you are cleaning the meters?
  • Bleach Wipes (any supplier) vs. Sani Wipe Purple wipes
  • Wet times based on?
    • NOVAs IFU re: Bleach Wipes Clorox - 1-minutes,
    • Sani Wipe Orange Bleach Wipe Instructions on bottle - 4-minutes,
      • Did you validate the meter with an extended wet-time??
    • Sani Wipe Purple Wipes & NOVA's IFU - 2 minutes

Hospital is TJC and Lab is CAP...............but as you all know in POC there is overlap!

Thank you so much!

We use SaniWipe purple only. There were a couple modules that were finding crystals on the meter after using bleach wipes, so we discontinued bleach completely and now do SaniWipes only

For purple SaniWipe, we allow meter to air-dry, we have not established best contact time. Generally nurses are doing one patient at a time so there are several minutes between patients. For larger modules there is always more than 1 meter, so if one is still wet, they just pull another meter and keep going.

We are using the grey-top SaniWipes, which are alcohol-free. According to the NovaBioMedical customer bulletin issued in March 2025, only the purple-top SaniWipes,  EPA Registration #9480-4, were validated by Nova. I have reached out to my Infection Prevention group to see if they are aware of this (no response as of yet), and am wondering if anyone else is using the alcohol-free, grey-top SaniWipes?
Not sure if this would be flagged in an inspection or not........Thoughts?

I have called Nova and received the two notifications (attached). For some reason even though I am on the list to receive these notifications, I did not. I was prompted to contact them as I heard during a local inspection JC was asking staff to demonstrate the proper cleaning of the Nova glucometer. The 2025 notification states the new procedure for cleaning (1st wipe) and the disinfection (2nd wipe). The second notification dated in May 2024 states the approved alternative wipes must be on the EPA lists S and N. Nova stated both of these notifications are current.

Hi, We were cited by JC last year for not following Nova's manufacturer IFU and doing the two-step cleaning and disinfection. This required a completed retraining of staff to follow the procedure. At that time only bleach was acceptable, then in February this year Nova updated their approved products to purple sani-cloth or bleach. We use a 2-minute dwell time for purple and 4 minutes for bleach. Many of our meters had to be replaced last year from the bleaching. So, we are happy to be able to use the purple again.

I recommend following the IFU.

Here's what we do:
1.      Clean meter after each patient use.  The operator should wear gloves when cleaning the meter.
2.      Clean the external surfaces of the meter with a hospital approved disinfectant wipe (ex. Super Sani-Cloth) or bleach wipe (10% bleach) for patients in isolation precautions.
3.      Keep the strip port of the meter pointed downward so as not to allow liquid to enter the meter.
4.      Disinfect with a new, fresh disinfectant or bleach wipe by thoroughly wiping the top, bottom, left and right sides a minimum of 3 times horizontally and 3 times vertically avoiding the meter’s barcode scanner, strip port and electrical connector.
5.      If the meter is visibly soiled clean with hospital approved disinfectant wipe, and then get another disinfectant wipe and disinfect the meter following the process stated.
6.      Ensure the meter stays wet for 2 minutes when using the disinfectant wipe or 4 minutes when using the bleach wipe.
7.      Allow the meter to air dry for an additional 1 minute.
8.      If using a 10% bleach wipe, once dry, follow with an alcohol pad or water-dampened cloth/gauze to remove all cleaning residue if necessary.
CAUTION: DO NOT immerse the meter or hold the meter under running water.
CAUTION: DO NOT spray the meter with a disinfectant solution.
