IT Workflows for POC Personnel

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out to the group to get a sense of how IT and POC responsibilities are split at your sites.

In our network, the POC team handles nearly all the technical aspects of our program once a test system is live. This includes everything from middleware AND device configurations and LIS interfacing to troubleshooting device connectivity and even managing server restarts.

We're finding this is a significant workload and are curious if this is the norm. Our IT department's role is currently very limited, and our efforts to discuss a more collaborative approach haven't gained much traction, largely because "it's always been done this way."

I'd love to hear from you: Does your POC team do this level of IT work, or does your IT department take the lead on the technical setup and troubleshooting of your POC systems?

Any insight you can provide would be a huge help as we try to build a case for a more sustainable workflow.

Thanks in advance!

Good morning! Our IT will not give us access to ANYTHING. IT and our BioMed Engineering team take the lead on install and most connectivity issues. Otherwise, the POC team takes care of everything else.

In our Healthcare system POCT is responsible for everything except Server level actions.
If we are bringing in a new platform IT manages the project and is instrumental with initial connectivity.... after that we are on our own.

Our POCT handles device configurations, middleware configurations and troubleshooting connections. Our IT department handles the servers and allows access through our firewalls and other networking issues. I actually wish our POCT had more access over the IT side. It is not easy to try to explain to IT people what we do and why we need what we need. I have spent the last several weeks banging my head against my desk trying to explain why both my wireless i-stat and it downloading dock have separate MACs and need separate IP addresses! In theory, I would prefer to just do it myself .

Similar to Brandy: Our POCT handles device configurations, middleware configurations and troubleshooting connections. Our POC team knows a lot about IP addresses (static and dhcp), MAC addresses, subnet mask, gateway etc - but can't do anything with our servers or data jacks or connecting the devices to our network without IT's assistance.  Our IT department handles the servers and allows access through our firewalls and all server upgrades/patch installs. We also have issues explaining to IT what we need them to do for us and its usually a lengthy and frustrating issue getting new devices connected to our network for the first time.

Our set up is similar to Brandy and Kari.  I handle the configurations and set up on the device as well as LIS/ Middleware.  Only thing I don't do is server reboots.
I partner with IT on the actual unit to connect the device to the computer system.
