For those using EPIC in physician office settings — are you currently printing patient barcode labels (distinct from lab specimen labels) for use with devices such as the glucose meter, Clinitek, Afinion, etc.?
These barcodes would include the patient’s CSN# for scanning purposes.
At present, many end users are manually entering patient IDs into these devices, which has led to a noticeable number of entry errors.
If you are printing patient barcodes:
Are you able to print individual labels (a la carte), such as one or two at a time?
Or are you limited to printing an entire sheet of barcode labels?
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated as we explore ways to improve accuracy and workflow.
hello our epic IT team built us a POCT label that auto prints when they order a POCT test that is interfaced like the Nova glucometer that has the correct CSN linked to the encounter they ordered the test under. We used to try to use ADT labels but the wrong encounter would get used quite often. they still enter MRN's sometimes but we will then send them the correct workflow sheets for CSN labels
Our sites usually print 2 depending on what tests the patient is having done. We have patient ID lockout installed on any instrument that we can do it on, so they have to scan a patient ID on the glucometer and DCA. They are supposed to scan for all of the POCT instruments that allow scanning but on occasion they have been know to enter a MR# on the Clinitek or Xpert Xpress. We do have a few errors with incorrect CSNs but we can find the correct encounter in EPIC and resend the result so it's manageable.
We print out the current encounter CSN barcode once we finish checking in the patient at our ambulatory sites. In EPIC, you can print out a sheet that has the CSN barcode, and readable CSN, and two patient identifiers (name and DOB). Since the patient doesn't get registered or receive an ID bracelet, this sheet is used when prompted by the interfaced POCT instrument for the patient ID. We just print on plain paper, not label stock to save money. The Operator then matches their labeled specimen (swab for example) to the display on the instrument and then proceed with performing the test. We have the instruments set up for unsolicited orders and the results autoverify in EPIC. This removes the post analytical clerical errors. However, when the Operator does not confirm that the scanned barcode is correct, this can cause wrong patient results to autoverify in EPIC. This is our biggest challenge with non-laboratory staff performing lab tests. They often don't honor the required pre-analytical steps.
