POCT and Epic Beaker

I have been told that Epic Beaker has a POCT module and that middleware wouldn't be needed. I find this questionable but wonder if anyone who has Beaker has POC devices connected directly.

My POCT results used to result into Beaker but we used RALS as the middleware ( received a lab #). When we merged with another company who also has EPIC, we switched to TELCOR and now my results a for POCT are under chart review in the Lab tab.(no lab #) I wonder if they are confusing where the results are showing up as I haven't heard of a Beaker POC  module. I did get certified in Beaker and helped build the module when we switched to EPIC years ago.

We do have a couple of instruments in the lab connected by DI to Beaker that could be considered POC as they are waived and some Dr. offices have them.:

Hello, we have been using Beaker-Epic for three years. All of my POC instrument results go to a middleware first (we use both Telcor and DI), before being released into Epic. I am not aware of any POC module in Epic...

Same here- we have RALS and DI

Kathleen- we use Beaker (the connected, interfaced devices) and EPIC and I believe your source is referring to clinical workflow in EPIC. Some folks call it “enter/edit” - it’s two different build processes.
We use EPIC POC module, to enter manual testing results, and instrument results not connected, not going through RALS.
Nurses do not need Beaker access to use the POC module and it’s “right there in EPIC” related to schedules and how they do other documentation.

We recently went live with EPIC and were informed that it does not support QC documentation for Point-of-Care Testing (POCT). To manage this, we continue to use RALS, which stores all POCT QC data.
However, for the fecal occult blood test performed exclusively by providers in our Emergency Departments, we opted to have results manually entered into EPIC rather than requiring providers to log into RALS.
At our request, the EPIC team built custom result prompts to capture the card lot number and expiration date, as well as the internal QC result. These fields were not included in EPIC’s standard POCT resulting template and had to be added to ensure compliance and proper documentation.
