Competency Reset

I was wondering what everyone's view of this idea.
Let us look at a hypothetical situation:
Suppose someone is trained and competencied for a non waived device at the 6 month mark and then goes on medical leave for some time and goes past the 12 month and maybe the annual - would you reset their competency period or would you competency them and call it what it would have been if it was at that point in their competency assessment period.

I had asked this question to my professor who taught quality and he essentially said you would not reset the competency period. You would assess them at the period that they would have been and just pray that the inspector doesn't ask about that individual.
I asked this question to him because I was taught to reset the competency assessment period if the end user was away for a long time which made sense; if you haven't used a device for a long time, can you trust them to remember what they were taught.

I know many have experienced this for individuals who are per diem, medical or maternity leave.

What is the correct way to deal with this situation?

Who is your accreditation agency?  A question for them I think.
That being said, I think if they miss the 6 months, you would have to train again.  What is in your policy?

To Sherilyn: I don't have anything in my policy. This question would be asked for CAP or Joint Commision.

If the user goes past their allotted frequency for their competency, their access is removed for testing until they can get their competency completed. Their access is reinstated at their original frequency once the competency is documented as complete. We maintain a record of when the user lost access, when the competency was completed and when access was restored.

If a user goes past one month of their competency due date, we reset them to initial training status and begin again. If it is within 30 days, they have access removed until competency is completed and resume the same schedule.

CAP has an FAQ for GEN.55500.  Here's the questions that might help you

Staff automatically lose access to the testing systems if they go past their due-dates for recertifications.  All systems are managed through POC software which controls their access to the systems.

Staff that do not complete the initial, 6-month and 12-month at the correct times are required to restart the first-year steps at our facilities.

Reset as if they just started and know nothing.  30 days grace period only

Thank you Christina for finding that! I see a lot of people have varying perspective. It is good that there is guidance from CAP.
