Hemocue min age limit

Hi all,
We asked Hemocue tech support a question about cord blood.  When they responded they included a letter from 2021 (that we didn't receive) that says the Hemocue is not approved for babies <1 month old.  Were we the only ones that didn't know that??

Hello,
We haven't heard about this letter. Is it possible to share this letter? There is no mention of age limit in their IFU.

If possible, can you please share this letter?
We have a large Hemocue footprint at our institution.

I have not heard this either.  Following if anyone has the letter.

It will not allow me to paste the letter but here is the body of it.

The HemoCue® Hb Systems are intended for quantitative
determination of hemoglobin in whole blood and can be used for
adults, adolescents and children >1 month old.
In the instructions for use, the procedure for how to perform
capillary finger sticks and measurements of venous blood samples
are described in detail.
Blood specimens obtained by skin puncture are especially important
in pediatrics, because small but adequate amounts of blood for
laboratory tests can be obtained with this technique. For children up
to about 6-8 months of age, capillary finger sticks should not be
performed due to the short distance between the finger bone and
the skin, instead capillary sampling from the heel is preferred.
The HemoCue® Hb Systems have been validated for use on children
in this age group using capillary heel sticks, and therefore they are
included in the capillary sample claim and can be used.
For guidance on how to perform a proper capillary heel sampling,
and at what age that is recommended, we refer to local procedures
and recommendations as this might vary between clinical settings.
Yours Sincerely,
HEMOCUE AB

Just curious - what is the clinical utility in doing total hemoglobin on cord blood?  I have never seen anything other than blood gas requests on that sample type, to ascertain fetal distress.

Hi James,
Intrauterine transfusions is what we would like to use it for.

thank you for the information Adonica!
