Requirements for staff performing training

We are working an creating a new workflow for competencies for moderately complex poc tests. (Currently still relying on our grandfathered-in nurses that are still able to run competencies.)

Can I still have nurses run initial trainings and they’re good to go? Then a technical consultant doesn’t have to meet with them until their 6-month competency?

Or do they need a technical consultant to deem them competent before they begin patient testing?

Thank you!

Training does not have to be done by a technical consultant. Competencies have to be done by a technical consultant. However, if your procedures call the initial training a competency then you probably should change the wording limiting it to training.

My understanding is that initially testing personnel need to be trained and demonstrate competency based off that training. These are two separate components being completed essentially on top of one another. If this is accurate, I will recommend someone who at minimum meets the criteria of Technical Consultant for initial non-waived testing.

As M.B. mentioned, competency assessment is required at initial training. It may be acceptable to have nursing do the training and a "skills assessment" then a TC can mark the operator as "competent" based on the 6 competency criteria. This should also be in a written procedure.
