POC Waived Hemoglobin options

What is everyone using for waived POC Hemoglobin?  We have a clinic office that currently is using the Hemocue 801 for hemoglobin testing and is reporting discrepant results.  They did a POC hgb at the office with the Hemocue 801 and got an 8.6 hgb result, so they collected a venous sample and sent it to our main lab and got an 11.6 hgb result.  The office does use capillary samples for the testing and I have gone over the process with them and they ensure it is being performed correctly.  With that being said, just seeing if there are other options out there that would potentially provide less variability in results or that may correlate better with laboratory hemoglobin results.  If you would prefer you can email me at aholland@catawbavalleymc.org.

Thanks!

We are using the 801 and 201s. We had the same issue and found two issues. The first was that they were not properly cleaning the device. The second was that they were actually performing toe sticks on children above the age of 6 months. When I was researching the issue further, I also found that hemolysis will affect the results leading to erroneous errors.
We have run into issues with the 2025 CLIA changes with our proficiency site that we use having tightened their ranges from +/- 7% to +/- 4%. This change has lead to numerous failures with this matter.

Speaking of, what are your QC requirements? I wrote the policy to do QC weekly. At my hospital Policy Committee they decided that because the manual says QC is not necessary, why do it at all? After heated discussion (by me), they settled on monthly. I pointed out that QC is to test the reagents and the USERS. Reference Heather, staff not cleaning device properly. I'm still fuming about this.
