Occult Blood and Physicians

Good Morning fellow POCC’s.

I have a question in regards to the Occult Blood.  I know that this test is considered as waived and can be performed by our Medical Assistants, but what if the MD wants to perform this test, would it be considered as Provider performed
or will it still be under waived test status?

Thank you,

It should still be “Waived”, but the MD must be trained and competency must be assessed yearly.

Thanks, Jeremy

I was under the impression that FOB testing is covered under physician credentialing. (ie...they would not need to do annual competencies.) We've used this guideline for years without issue.

Kelyn Celeskey

We are a CAP inspected hospital and as of April 2014, credentialing was no longer an acceptable means of physician competency. If providers are performing FOB testing, it is a Provider Performed Test and competency must be assessed as well as proficiency testing. If RN staff is doing the testing, it is waived.

We are TJC inspected and in our last inspection physician credentialing came up.  We had all the necessary wording in our credentialing, however there was no proof that there was any initial training.  Medical staffing would still need to have documentation showing the credentialing process and that providers were actually trained.  So we went back to training and annual competency assessment.

Jon - the test is classified as waived no matter who runs it.

Hello,

If providers, alone, are performing the testing then the only CAP requirements are those listed under the PPT section.  Competency does need to be accessed initially, however, PT is not required.  See below.

The Provider-Performed Testing section is used alone
to inspect the tests when performed by a qualified provider, the other sections of the Point-of-Care Testing Checklist and the All Common Checklist do NOT apply.

Hope this helps,

Patty
