MTS (Medical Training Solutions) out of the University of Washington is a fabulous resource for this kind of thing (www.medtraining.org).  Online competency assessment for a full range of PPMP.  No chasing down physicians (except electronically) or shuffling papers; easily managed from a remote perspective.  Economical, as well.  Very customer friendly.  Can also develop your own custom competency modules.  Great program -

we use MTS but it does not cover the 6 elements required for PPMP, so we use it as one of the 6 (unknown sample).

Joint Commission cited us for this issue back in 2014, and we developed a new system and competency form in response.

True...

You do have some N/A regarding the six elements, no?  E.g. - QC, instrument maintenance, problem solving skills?

Just curious how reasonable/unreasonable J.C. was...

By documenting your name as the observer, you are verifying that the physician followed policy and procedure appropriately and is competent to perform this test.

*In areas where patient testing volume is very low, internal blind testing, old proficiency testing, or verbal explanation of procedure can be used for simulation of patient testing.

If the physician does not demonstrate satisfactory performance on the competency assessment and requires retraining and reassessment, document corrective actions/retraining.

Attachment. 2016 PPMP Competency Assessment Form.xlsxWe were recently cited as well for not having all forms of competency. Here is the form we developed in response. We have a microscopy problem solving quiz, images from old PPM proficiency tests, and 'test' patients for each sample type. We are now in the process of doing the direct observations for all providers using the test patients. We have them prepare the sample as usual, read it, verbalize how they would document in the chart, and finish off by cleaning the scope and initialing the microscope cleaning log.

If regulated by the CAP, no matter how you "slice it," the direct observation piece is a "killer." They do NOT allow any remote methods (video, Zoom, etc) and this is a huge issue for university medical centers when we have 30-60 MDs to certify /re-certify their competencies. We are checking the credentials of the medical education coordinators to see if they qualify and get them to share the load.
