HI Everyone!
My name is Michelle and fairly new to poc. recently just started taking over the point of care at Baylor Scott and White Round Rock, Tx. I have never used the I-stat before. So my question is this: Do you conduct monthly quality control training for the end users?

We conduct training for new users as they are hired. We do not have a specific day for training. The nurse educator sets it up as they are being oriented to the unit.
Michelle, are you asking if you train end users to run the monthly liquid QC? If so, we do have specific users that we have trained to run the monthly QC. Ivy
Does I-stat liquid QC need to be performed every 30 days for blood gases?
Training is done at inital hire then at 6 mos. and then annually there after. All are trained to do and follow montly protocols for QC for Blood Gases. We try to make sure each user rotates QC each month. RIght now only RT is using for Blood gases.
Yes, Gases need 3 levels each month on each lot in use. We also run an additional whole blood Hypo and an additional HYPER with the 6 mo. CLEW updates. 3 levels of QC for shipment integrety also.
My question was so vagje and i apologize. So in my new facility, i found a training sheet for "monthly and new lot qc" and the end users, whenever i guess we receive a new lot, is that i use that sheet and evaluate whoever is running it. Does that make sense? I think that this is a lite over the top, but i wanna know what you all think. When i got on board to this new job, there was no overlapping from the last pocc so i am having to learn all what needs to be done. Appreciate any insight.

I have a qc sheet that I use to do new lots and lot to lot comparisons. The sheet has both controls listed and their designated values and a place to write ones result. There's also a column in which you can run a control on the previous lot to compare ones results. There's a question stating if this is a lot to lot comparisons check yes or no to let an inspector know if its for a new lot comparison. Remember when your running controls your checking the new lots or cartridges, your analyzer, and those who are running the controls...so it's not just checking the end user.
I hand these sheets out monthly to designated people in each department that have been trained to run liquid qc on the I-Stat. The catch is CAP wants everyone that uses the I-Stat to run liquid qc eventually, not only designated individuals. To get around this I have POC operators run at least one liquid qc for their competencies, to prove that all who use the I-Stat would know how to run a control. Though they run it as a patient I would talk them through how to run it as a control. CAP was ok with this process when inquired upon during my last inspection. Remember if your using the I-Stat you either have to have an IQCP written or need to be running liquid controls every day of patient testing.
Hope this helps.
