Hi all!
What do you do when you conduct initial trainings for the I-STAT,
Do you have users run 2 levels of QC and a blind?
Thank you in advance for your responses!
Michelle

We have operators run all available levels of QC and a blind. They also take a written test.

Staff runs a blind sample.
training includes the following:
basic test principle, QC requirements, patient test procedure, results interpretation, limitations of method and basic troubleshooting
We have operators run one control and verbalize in person: common error codes, patient prep, patient sampling, misc skills (assessing patient presentation with questionable results). They also take an online learning module and test.
I have them run an external simulator and blind patient sample in which they have to get some kind of results (*** and <> acceptable due to material used) NOT a quality check code. They also have to use a specific barcode. Do the same for annual competency check. Ivy
would running an external simulator suffice for quality control?
Yes
It IS quality control, and I use it as "performing a QC function" for my waived users only. If they are using on a mod-complex basis, I have them do 1 level of liquid QC both initially and 6-month and annually. That's my "spin" on things though; the CAP standard just says "QC" - it doesn't get very specific.
