Glucose Results that are "HI" out of the AMR

Do you require a sample be sent to the lab for ALL "HI" glucose results performed on the meters?  Anyone willing to share their policy?

Thank you

Any result that is greater or less than linearity is supposed to be sent to lab or confirmed by a second method.  Since the floors cannot perform dilutions on the handhelds they do not really know how "HI" the result is and may not give enough medication.  If it is too low it may be a dilution factor and may need a lab result.

First we have them repeat because it is critical, then they follow the following procedure.

Our policy is to have a lab glucose drawn for verification for the first in a series meter glucose value that is above 500 mg/dl (our highest level reportable limit).  Subsequent >500 glucoses do not need lab verification as they are monitoring for glucose to fall below 500.

I think sending the first in a series makes sense especially for an ED patient.  They will not continue to send a specimen for every glucose result that is above 550mg/dl which is the meter AMR. I am in the process of revising my policy and appreciate your feedback.
