Hello POCCs,

This morning my director asked me to look into waived POC cholesterol testing.  I would appreciate your recommendations and or suggestions.  If you could also share your pros and cons it would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you,

Ramona

Hello Ramona,

I only have experience with Alere Cholestek. We only use it though in Diabetes Clinics. Except for the clinic having to buy an instrument when it went belly up (meaning the company did not trade it out for us), the MDs and staff never complained about the instrument.

We also have used the Cholestek for Health Screenings with favorable results. Clients like the fact that they did not have to wait to find out if there was an issue. It is very simple to operate.

We had brief interest in POC cholesterol testing some years ago.  When the department interested (employee health) were fully challenged on whether there was value-added and also whether the patient would actually be counseled/followed up at the time of testing, the idea was abandoned and never brought up again.  Another example of "just because something CAN be done POC, doesn't mean it should."  :)

Hello! My name is Amy and I am a rep for Alere. We manufacture the Cholestech Lipid Analyzer for POC testing. Please reach out if you'd like addtional info.

Thanks!

Amy
