Glucose safety lancets

Has anyone had to verify the expiration date of safety lancets per Joint Commission? If so, how have you handled this issue? Currently, the clinical staff at my facilities remove them from the box and places them in a case which makes it difficult to determine the expiration date. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
