Phlebotomy Competency

Does anyone have a way to prove competency of physician office staff for collection of blood for lab tests? Do you do observed draws? What regulations are out there for training/yearly competency checks for phlebotomy?
Thanks.

Hi Lacey- what state are you in? Usually the DOH* will have what state regs are required.
*NYSDOH regulation's (Hospital)- Competency test initial hire, 6 months after hire and annually thereafter (from hire date). Observed phleb draws are also required along with a Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy Lab Course/College, and take ASCP Test (valid for 3 years). If the provider office is billing the venipuncture the state may require the certificates
We are in Indiana. Our physician offices are drawing labs but I'm curious to see how they can be checked off to be competent in an inspector's eyes.
Lacey- I can send you our competency forms /check list/ quiz for our Medical Center if you are interested. Email me at bpost@ghvhs.org
