Does anyone have a good presentation about POCT for providers/nurses?

Hi, I've been a lab tech in the Army for almost 17 years (but spent most of the time doing anything BUT lab work). Now that I am finally assigned to a hospital, I have been put in the POCC position and I've had to learn on my feet. I oversee POCT for over 20 sites, most of which are different clinics in the hospital but there are a few that are located elsewhere. Needless to say, being the only POCT person in the hospital, I stay pretty busy! I had an idea to try and coordinate a presentation for the hospital staff (especially providers and nurses who use POCT in their respective clinics) to explain what POCT is, why it is important to them and their patients, and that when I'm running around "bothering" them while they're trying to work, its not because I'm a jerk, but because of the standards I have to help them uphold. It's aggravating to constantly be brushed off and catch attitude when I'm trying to help THEM keep their testing! Anyway, I was hoping if I could offer this training for them, maybe it will improve our professional relationships. I am definitely open to suggestions too! Thanks.

This is a great idea, as I am new to the position too. I will be following this discussion and hopefully we can get some ideas!

I love the Whitehat webinars - they're free and pull from many different POC experts and topics. You can also go back to previous years to review slide decks and presentations as well. (https://www.whitehatcom.com/POC_Group_Webinars_2019.htm)

We have four POCCs in our program with 19 point of care tests in 106 units on-site and 12 community sites. Our program is split - waived testing falls under Joint Commission; moderate complexity falls under the CAP. I cover 12 waived tests - TJC requires two measures of competency per year (versus CAP requiring 6). Our office manages short Powerpoint presentations, as well as quizzes, for each of the test systems (waived and mod complex) across the board. These presentations, paired with our 'train the trainer' sessions for all unit designees, allow for us to communicate the 'why' and 'how' of Point of Care testing. We also expect that all new staff are taught the 'why' during their initial training for the POCT they will be performing.

Learning to communicate effectively with those without any lab background has been a challenge, but when you speak their speak - ie use verbage as written in regulations that impact accreditation, then it becomes easier for them to begin to wrap their heads around why we require things to be done the way they are.

Attachment. Point of Care 101-2019.pptx  Here is my PowerPoint that we've used to introduce others in the lab to our POCT department, as well as using it for the MLS and MLT schools in the area. Feel free to use what you'd like from it.

Karen-

Your PP talks about the walkthrough that you perform annually. I am looking to implement that to my ambulatory clinics (~66 sites). Would you be willing to share yours?

I think it is pretty good.
