labeling QC and glucose strips

Our facility uses Nova Biomedical Stat strip QC and glucose strips.  In the past our policy was to label expiration date with a Sharpie and cover with a clear piece of tape so the expiration date do3es not get rubbed off.  After our Joint Commission inspection our facility has banned tape in all areas of the hospital.  I need recommendations for pens that will not rub off or suggestions for an alternative labeling method.

We have departments that use a small label maker to label the QC.

WE use especially made labels and we use Sharpie Permanent Marker Fine Point.

They do not rub off. It has to be marked Permanent Marker.

We use Avery labels with the open and expiration date.

Sent via Groupsite Mobile.

We use yellow labels with lines for Open and Expiration Dates. Sharpies work best for longevity.

Can you provide vendor information for the labels?

I have always had good luck with sharpie markers.   Did you try the markers used to label frozen objects like vials?   Those might work.

Michele Johnson - If JC banned tape would they ban stickers?

Hi Michelle,

We have a facility that uses the Nova glucose meters and StatStrip test strips and QC. This is not related to your date rubbing off issue, but would be curious to find out what, if anything, do you do for monthly QC monitoring and statistics?  Do you know if there are peer group statistics available?  I plan to call Nova directly to hear their take as well.

Donna,

We had label made special order through United Ad Label. Phone # 630-762-3108.
I dealt with Andrew Palmer. Nice guy!
WE had to buy so many rolls when they designed the labels per my instructions. See attached
The round labels fit the NOVA Strip vials lids and the small rectangular labels fit the QC vials without covering the barcode.
This was in 2012 and we are starting to run out.
I have to order from another company in the meantime but they were not as nice as these ones.
The QC labels were Item # 349576V; the round labels were 349575V.
Maybe UAL made them regular in their catalog. I have not really looked into it lately.

We were just inspected by TJC  last Fall.

They did not say anything about the bright yellow labels we are using.

What is their objection to the tape?

Thanks!
