Eye pH

I found out that our Pediatric ED has been performing eye pH.  They are using the pH nitrazine paper that is also used in L&D.  I reached out to a physician in the ED regarding testing and he stated they only need pH testing for eye injuries and that the pH paper they have only tests for acidic but they also need basic pH testing paper.  Can anyone tell me what pH paper they are using for eye pH and provide me with any procedures, quizzes, training documents etc?  Any and all information is helpful.  I am not too familiar with testing but want to make sure I get everything in place before our inspection next year. Thank you!

We have been dealing with this for a few years now.  I'll send you some info to your private email address if you can provide that to me please.  We are using "Hydrion pH paper", pH 1.0 - 11.0.  The website is www.MicroEssentialLab.com.

I would strongly suggest finding a physician champion in the department to support and enforce your education & compliance efforts.

Hi,

Same thing just happened where I work, we just found out our ER is performing eye pH.

At your locations, are the nurses performing the eye pH or only the doctors? Would you mind sharing the same pH information with me?

Thank you!

We are about to start training our ED nurses on the eye pH process and I was wondering if anyone had developed a powerpoint presentation they'd be willing to share? Thanks in advance!

Attachment. PH TESTING FOR EYE PH COMPETENCY TRAINING .ppt

A year ago we changed to Micro Essential Laboratory pHizatest.

Lois Snider pointed out that  Decon Lab pH paper is not FDA approved. pHIZATEST is  FDA approved.    pHIZATEST Nitrazine Indicator Paper. Item # 14-850-115.  SKU FSC14850115H.   It is around $27 each roll of 15 ft.

Change the name on the Power Point Presentation.

This question reminded me to update my PPT.

Thanks.

Thank you Pet! Is there any way you can send it to me directly? My computer won't open it from the listserv.

Thanks so much!!

Hi all. Old discussion here, but I'm in the same boat. TJC found that the ED is doing eye pH and we have no protocols in place. Does anyone have a policy and/or competency form they would be willing to share? Thanks!

If your physicians do an eye pH, is this an orderable/billable test at your institution?  Is anyone CAP accredited?  from what I can tell, it looks like for the providers to do eye pH, proficiency testing as to be done at a CAP institution.
