Hi, we have our POC Coordinator here in California as a Tech Specialist on Salary CLS with at least 4 years experience in Gen Lab running around the $50 per hour mark. Non Union.

I need to come work there. New Jersey with over >30 experience is not making that much.

Wow - California has a good pay rate. I'm in Seattle, non-union, hourly (PT - 24 hrs/week), 10 years generalist lab MLS, just started POCC 6 months ago, $37.97/hr + benefits.

Stay on the West Coast!!!! East coast doesn’t come close to that!!! I am in Virginia and make a little more than HALF of that!!!

The POCC’s in my area are classified as MLT3 (union) and are $40.74 CDN.

I have seen these salaries in California with CLS laboratorians making $50-$60/hr in SoCal.  But do not forget that a dumpy 2-3 bdrm, 1200 sqft Ranch-style "house" on a postage stamp lot in Orange county costs ~ $1,000,000.  If someone were to move from SoCal to Missouri, where they make even less than the East Coast, that person would have a financial heart attack. Wink  $50/hr could be equivalent to about $20/hr elsewhere based on the cost of living.  There are areas of northern California where they do not make the salary of SoCal.  I am in Coastal Virginia, and I would love to make $50/hr Cool

I am the first POCC at my facility - ever. Community Hospital (188 beds) with multiple specialty clinics performing POCT as well.

The job description requires Bachelor's Degree CLS, minimum 3 years lab experience and licensure. Direct report to the Laboratory Director. This job is considered to be on par with our core lab technical specialists. Salary: Pay Grade EX075 ($27.58 - $44.05).

This is a 40 hr/week position.

Alright now you are forcing me to defend my home turf :).

Yes, in general California is relatively High COL compared to other state, but a generalization is a generalization. The average state COL does not mean every city in CA has high COL. As you know CA is a huge state from rural to urban. COL varies dramatically within the state and the entry level wage for CLS is still 40-50/hr. Look at the COL between San Jose (possibly highest in the state) and Roseville (a very suburban city), both in CA:

https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/san-jose-ca/roseville-ca/100000

In my opinion, the true drivers of the high wages in CA are the state cert and the strong unions.

Apologies if this has gone too far off topic.

I am retiring next year after 41 years. Job requires a Bachelor Degree. I started here at $4.76/hr in 1978 and after all these years, yes salaries have risen, but I will never see $30/hr before I retire.

To all,

This is timely as my institution is discussing salary bands now. I am at the top of my pay band now and have been for 3 years. I have forwarded this discussion to my boss.

What I would like to know is if anyone has the same type of situation that I do and the salary band if they do. I have multiple facilities (6) but have no people who report to me. I seldom do wet work, but am the back up for emergencies (people leaving/FMLA) if wet work needs to be done. I also have RT responsibilities for all of those hospitals monitoring regulatory and comps.

I have 6 hospitals with 2 FTE scattered throughout the facilities. All POCC are usually lab supervisors or lead techs that have bench duties besides POCT.  I also have 7 outlying clinics that are only doing HCG for patient prospecting.

I am told frequently, when the issue of salary is raised that "there is not anything to compare your job to within the city."

Anyone who would like to reply to this, please feel free to do it privately if you like.

Last year relocated from Southern California to Northern California. We were looking into moving out of state to either Oregon, Washington or Idaho. My husband works for the Fed so he pretty much makes the same wherever. The kicker was my job as a CLS in California. After evaluating the tax rates, housing cost and utilities we overall determined we would be better off to stay in California because in the areas we were looking at in those other states cost of homes and cost of living was not significantly lower.

In Southern California my hourly ranged from $35-45/hour + full benefits as a bench tech. In Northern California it jumped to $55-65/hour + benefits as a bench tech. Cost of living between the two areas of California was about the same.

For the resources, have you tried payscale.com, glassdoor.com, indeed.com, or linkedin.com? Some of them you have to sign in to see the numbers. Or you can google point of care coordinator salary to see all of the websites.

I know it is not 100% accurate, sometimes not even close, but at least there are some data points. You can pick whichever one to help you show the numbers to the administrations.

>30 years Lab experience >10 as POCC.   I'm asking for a raise.

We have 2 POCT Consultants for a 180 bed Community Hospital with multiple HUB locations performing POCT as well as full service chem/heme bench top analyzers. Required BS, MT or MLT with 2+ years experiences and licensure.  We report to the Lab Manager and are considered part of the Core Lab Management Team. Starting $35/hr. Salary but we work well over 40 hrs/week with traveling to multiple HUB locations.
