Urine specific gravity

Does anyone report urine specific gravity with a refractometer at POC?  Which instrument do you use and what issues have you had?  Thanks!

Remember that a refractometer S.G. is not a waived test and you would therefore be up against all the mod-complex guidelines.  I found that out the hard way by rolling it out without double-checking the guidelines - it's such an easy test I just assumed it was waived.  Is there another method you could substitute?

We use the PAL 10S. The problem with it is that it is considered moderately complex when a Clinitek or glucose meter are more complex than it is. You simply fill the well about halfway up, wait approximately 20 seconds, press a button and voila-there is the SpecGrav! We had to move to a refractometer because chemo can mess with the urine dipstick reading.

We use it for chemo patients. Main concern is competencies due to moderate complexity. initial, 6, 12 months...annual thereafter as well as training. Nursing education takes care of competencies for us which is awesome because they know the users better and they have more ways to reach them during competency time. POC manages the process, forms, and communicates with nursing education... usually meet quarterly for check in with nursing education to make sure things are good and on track.

Another concern has been testing safety since the urine tested is chemo contaminated...end users must wear proper ppe at all times. There are concerns with eye safety from time to time if there is overflow of urine.
