iSTAT vs Hemachron

We have been using iSTAT Celite ACT for over 4 years in our Cath Lab/Vascular Surgery areas.  We have a new doctor who has
come who insists he only has to wait 60 seconds for heparinized perfusion with a Hemachron Signature Elite, whereas the iSTAT takes in the 200 seconds range.  Does anyone have experience with these analyzers who can explain the difference to me ?

Hi Louise,

The difference in the cath lab/vascular surgery areas is simply the warm-up time.  On the Elite, the cuvette is inserted into the device and warmed while the sample is being collected.  On the iSTAT, you add the sample, then place the cartridge in the device.  Testing does not begin until the internal calibration is completed which can take over a minute- thus the perception of a difference.  The actual test takes the same time for an ACT-LR on the Elite and the iSTAT ACT.

Hi Louise,

We had the very same issue in our Cardiovascular Department.  We ended up switching to the Hemochron Sig. Elite.  Like Dr. Zucker said it really does come down to the fact that you are pre-warming the cuvette while getting ready to add the sample. Makes the test time seem shorter.  I've been pleased with the Hemochron.

One thing about the Hemochron ACT is that the user can see the seconds counting.  Our perfusionists feel like this speeds up the procedure and makes them more efficient because once they reach the "magic" number that can proceed without waiting for the final result.
