Confirming bedside glucose results

This question was probably asked before.

Do you have a reflex process for confirming bedside glucoses with the laboratory, or is confirmation up to the attending physician to request?

We are looking to revise our present process and would like to know what the majority are doing.

Thank you

Hi Gail,

We only ask for Lab confirmation on critical results ≥25.0 mmol/L. I audit this compliance yearly. We are working on having it added to a Clinical Order Set or a Medical Directive. Right now it is only written in our SOP's.

We ask for lab confirmation on critical results, <40 and >400 mg/dL.

We require lab confirmation on bedside glucoses that are <25 and >600.

We require immediate recheck / tepeat of bedside glucose for critical <40 or >400 .

If it repeat is more than +/- 15 on lower end or more than +/- 50 on higher end it has to be repeated by lab draw/ test.

Also all 1st admission critical bedside Glu must be confirmed by lab draw / test.
