Eye kits in ER areas

To all...

How do you handle eye kits in the ER and the pH paper that is used within them?
Who does the testing? Nurses or docs?
Who does the competencies, if any?
What is the pH range for the paper provided?
Who is the vendor for the paper used?
Who is your inspection agency?

How are the results recorded?

Any and all information will help. Thanks.

Hello Deanna,   double check with the ER.   See if they will be reporting the pH results?

If no results are being posted to the chart, CAP  does not consider this a lab test.

Before I checked with CAP,  doctor would flush the patient's eye and check the pH

to make sure that the eye was cleaned.  Once a month the PA would run controls

and log in results with paper Lot #.  I would review control sheet once a month for POC.

You maybe setting this up for the ER to take responsibility for the process.

Just make up a log sheet for the ER to keep track of the pH paper and controls.

Hope that this helps....Be Safe   Betty

Hi Deana,

See my answers below:

How do you handle eye kits in the ER and the pH paper that is used within them? Nurses and doctors need to do an initial and annual competency and they are also instructed to take turns in running the monthly QC. Lab POC orders and supplies the pH paper, and run the new lot/new shipment QC.
Who does the testing? Nurses or docs? Both
Who does the competencies, if any? Both
What is the pH range for the paper provided? Since the normal ocular fluid should be near a pH 7.1, we use the Hydrion pH paper with a range of 4.0 to 9.0
Who is the vendor for the paper used? MicroEssentialLab
Who is your inspection agency? CAP

How are the results recorded? Enter/Edit using a Epic test code
