For i-Stat users, does anyone know by using different sample container would change the complexity of the testing? Like syringe to test tube or tube without gel to tube with gel?
I have a site that have expiring lithium Hep tubes with no gel and have no more stock. Thinking of validating the lit. Hep tube with gel which they have on stock so we can switch eventually.

The complexity of the test in partially based on how the sample is obtained not the type of container it is collected in. So as far as I know the tube type doesn't matter.
As to whether of not you need to validate gel vs non gel I don't know. We had a similar situation here where we switched to a different tube manufacturer. We validated the main lab analyzers for the switch but laboratory Director didn't want to involve the POC devices as we were having difficulty getting Cartridges from Abbott. I'm hoping that we will be covered on the validation process for POC along with the Main Lab. BTW they was little to no difference in analytes from one type of tube to another.
If you use a container not listed in the acceptable collection containers from the product user manual, you would be operating the test as a LDS "high complexity". I was in a similar situation, and there is nothing in the i-STAT user manual that says gel tubes are not acceptable containers. I don't have it on hand, but their manual basically said syringe or tube containing balanced heparin. To my knowledge you are fine. It would be up to your medical director as to what you would do if they felt a validation was needed.
