I am thinking of taking the AACC Point of Care Professional Certification in November and wondering if anyone has taken it before and have any tips on how to prepare or what to study for the exam? Thank you so much!

Good morning Janelle! Good Luck on your study group!!
I put together the first study group for this exam. It was a great opportunity to collaborate on POC with others. True, Peggy, I am energetic and passionate about POC! I simply asked for others who wanted to study together and help sessions once a week at a time that would fit most of our availability. I took the study guide and divided it up for 5 weeks. Each week, the participants had homework before we met online using Webex. We needed to prepare our contributions to every topic that would be discussed. Some provided examples with sources and some contributed by in depth discussions. I took notes and ended each session with mailing our collective contributions and the next weeks homework. I learned so much from our group and made some life long friends. We were all successful in passing, those that took the exam. I did have a few persons join the study group who stated from the beginning that they were not taking the exam but wanted to be a part of the group. Everyone helped educate everyone. What a great experience!
Sources: Use the sources that AACC recommends. I did find the book by Luppe to be very helpful. The POC certificate exam materials are also beneficial. Maybe someone from your study group has taken it and can offer support there. Tietz, and the online materials...all great!
Words to the wise: Suggested at our first meeting, don't get too caught up in specific accreditation applications. Keep it general. (Best advice ever!). Also, the online exam format is a little quirky. Make sure you set up ahead of time and test your system.
Good luck! Have fun!!
Erika

Janelle,
Can you add me to the group too? My email is jhardy@grhs.net.
Thanks so much,

Thanks so much Peggy and Erika for your recommendations! I really appreciate it!
Hi Sheryl Place - please email me your email address so I can include you in the email group.
Hi Karinna Castillo - I'm not sure how long this test has been around but I'm assuming it is probably the same as the one offered a few years ago.
I ended up adding everyone else that requested to be added to the email group unless you didn't send me your email address.
Thanks everyone! Wish us luck ðŸ™

Hi Erika,
Wondering if u could help impart some of your knowledge to me on how to best organize the study group? Did u just split up thr subjects in 5 weeks? And how long was each session? I have more than 10 people interested in joining and wanted to know how to best make use of our time. And did everyone take turns presenting? And did u take most of the notes and people would send u their material to include in the notes as well? I would really appreciate any advice u can give. i did take the AACC online certificate program and bought the poct book by luppa. I was looking also in webex but noticed it is only 50 mins free.. Another member mentioned Google meets so I'm going to look into that as well.
Thank you for all your help! It is much appreciated. If possible can u please send me your email as well in case I have nore questions and I won't have to keep posting to the group.
Thanks,
Janelle Cabal

I'll read this later and get back to you.
Here are a couple of tips that worked well for 4 but applicable to a study group of 10:
1. Establish doable call length (ours was an hour). Shana scheduled the outline bullets into doable chunks using a time line. We chose to study over 2 1/2 - 3 months which also included a buffer at the end which we called 'review' calls. I think we didn't use the last review week and one of the review weeks we just went over 'the rules' we read or saw on a video about setting up an acceptable 'environment'/space to take the exam (clear the clutter!).
2. I've used a free 'dropbox' for years to share content with external colleagues. Avoids distribution lists, losing email addresses, forgetting to attach the file! My study buddies agreed to install free 'dropbox' www.dropbox.com Super helpful is that the app can be installed on multiple devices for each end user. The 'owner' sets up a series of folders that are then 'shared'. I don't know if 10 end users can share the same folders on a free account.
You will get some good tips from Erika, too!
ps by the way - each of us on this Groupsite can also send private emails to each other. Look for 'actions' under the pictures on the left column. In case you lose someone's email address. Nice feature!

We had approximately 14 people who participated. Some where present every session and some were hit or miss. I did not limit the amount of persons who participated and it really had no consequence on how things unfolded for us. I could see it might need to be smaller if organized with specific assignments for specific persons.
1. I took all of the requested participants and evaluated what time zones we were dealing with. I chose a few times that worked for me too and proposed it to the others. For me, I held our 1 hour sessions at 530 pm EST. We did lose one or two persons due to the time of day.
2. I used Webex because I had access to it. There are numerous platforms for virtual meetings now. Chose one that works for you. What I liked about Webex is that I could share my screen with everyone. I did request the if anyone had something to share that they send it to me ahead of time. That way I could include it for others to view and discuss during our session. Using the outline study guide AACC provided, I just took it in sections each week. I think that meant we discussed around 5 to 7 topics a session. Every participant knew what the next session would be discussing. It was expected that we all took the week prior to review and prepare our contributions to learning/growing our knowledge together for each topic. My group was AWESOME!! I did learn sooooo much from all of them. We didn't "take turns" presenting. I opened the meetings with the topics listed and we started with the first one. I would state a very general interpretation and ask if anyone had contributions. Most of the time we inherently took turns, adding to what others stated. Agreeing or finding other completely different interpretations. We had some who contributed ALOT and some that mostly absorbed what everyone was talking about. We were very lucky to have some seasoned vets on hand!
3. I took notes on the shared screen outline. At the end of each meeting, I shared the notes taken and any contributed materials via email to all participants. Everyone who wanted to participate got the weekly summations.
I would be happy to help, share or give support!
