Process approval for new POCT Testing

How does your hospital approve or deny request for new point of care testing?  Do you have a Point of Care Council that discusses patient need, cost, oversite etc?  If so, who is included in the council?  Any information will be helpful.

Thanks so much!

We have a POCT Committee that reviews all new testing.  We are a multi-system organization made up of 5 hospitals and 3 free standing ER's.  The Committee is made up of the Medical Directors and the POCT Coordinators.  We meet quarterly to review any new requests that have been submitted.  We have a Request for Point of Care Testing form the unit requesting the testing fills out and submits.  When the Committee meets we review the request and vote on whether to move forward with the request or deny the request.

We have a similar process. Since we are a large system, we have the POC manager, POC Technical Scientist, applicable director, and the submitter all join a committee meeting to discuss. Once the submitter states their case, they drop off the meeting and the POC group discusses and either approves, denies, or asks follow up questions.

Thank you all for the info.  What are the key factors that help make the decision for approval and how often are request denied?  One of my main concerns is POCT staffing to manage.  Do you formally document the approval or denied request?    If possible, could you share any documents/forms for this process. My email is woodwars@musc.edu.
Sorry for all of the questions. ☺

We are also a larger system and are similarly setup like Connie and Lindsey's system in size and personnel.
Lab Leadership meets weekly to discuss recent events which would include POC requests.  We also have a VAT "Value Analysis Teams" for the lab and nursing has their own as well.
Lab proposes a POC system that it has approved and proposes it to the nursing VAT team to confirm it meets their needs.

We have POCT committees that discuss requests for POC testing. The forms require that they give a justification for why they need the device/test. If it is new to the system, it would need to go through VAT for approval as well. The committee is comprised of the POCT team, POC medical directors, unit/clinic directors who have requested the devices. We try to include hospital administration as well, so that they can assess  the device/test for cost and value added to the department. Sometimes the requests are because a provider or nurse used a device at their last job and wants to bring it in. Sometimes it makes sense, and sometimes it does not. Then it will be denied. Or, it might be revised and then possibly gets approved. Shea, I can send the request form we use to your email.

Do any of you have a standard form that you use for your committee decision?  We are working on a standard decision matrix and would love to see what others use for their value added assessment.
