Competencies- do you go to the operators or have them come to you?

Do you have the nurses come to you for their competencies/trainings or do you go on the floor to do them?

I do a combination of both. I usually join the annual skills they perform with the education department. This takes place in our simulation lab and I am one of many stations they must complete.
For other units, I attend skills training on their units.
For those units that do not have any skills scheduled in the time that I need, I set up competencies in the lab and they come to me.

It's a combination of ways. We try to tack onto skills days if possible. We sometimes set up training windows for them to stop by.  We make appointments for those that missed the skills day or scheduled training windows. Basically it's an ongoing year around activity.

I do a combo of both as well. Similar to what Brandy Kenny mentioned already.

Hi Jennifer,

Generally the NPDs do initial and annual competencies. The times that we (POC) help they come to our office. I have also seen education fairs and set up a POCT skills station. Hope this helps.

Neither if we can help it.  With thousands of testing personnel and a menu of 37 instruments/tests/devices, our 3-person POCT team doesn't have enough time!  We train and observe skills for SuperUsers (mostly nurse educators).  The SuperUsers train new operators and observe skills when necessary.  Most annual education is done completely on-line by way of PowerPoint lessons, multiple-choice quizzes, and a statement attesting to having run at least one test.

Hi Jennifer...We have Nurse Educators. They are responsible for training all new onboarding associates. We also have a my Learning platform online where they can pull up the training at anytime they are due for renewal. The competencies get sent to us for grading and we input them into our RALS system. We are currently working on utilizing and acquiring the "eQuiz" platform in RALS. This will be the best thing in the whole world for us! All the competencies will come to us online. We can grade them and they will become renewed instantly. We used to have nursing come to us for just about all training and we used to have skill fairs but we take care of 4 large hospitals and 2 Free Standing ER's. We had to come up with a better plan that works for everyone...there's just 2 of us! Hope that helps and have a great day!

We actually do both. The nursing educators come here for training/competencies. Also, depending on the unit we may have new staff come to us or we may go to a unit for monthly skill day sessions. The advantage of our POCT team doing the initial training is that we know it is pretty consistent. That being said, we could not function without our unit educators who do the vast majority of training and competencies.

More of the Super Users on the units that do the comps but on occasion if they are between people we will have them come to us.  We also do the POCT course during nursing orientation for the nurses and techs every month.
