New CLIA changes

I understand that after December 28 nurses will no longer qualify to assess competency.   It is unclear about performing initial training.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi! Thanks, Christin.
My suggestion is (painful) to use the link Christin provided to see that there are several places where grandfathering is allowed after 12.28.24. I'm glad one of the attendees came back and told participants about the TCs being included. How long any of us can hang on to employees who can grandfather is a big question but it's at least an option.

On the PPMP 'changes' - that's not a change in CLIA. If you (painfully) read the verbiage in final rule, it's been a CLIA reg because there is no CLIA inclusion language for the role of TC in PPMP which means it must be the LD to do the PPMP competency assessments (I think none of us clued in because no accreditation inspector mentioned that in any webinar or talk we've heard in the last 20 years!).

It is possible that YJC or CAP (or other regulatory agencies) could not agree with CLIA about grandfathering. I certainly hope that is not the case. This is definitely going to negatively impact our program and patient care at some of our facilities. The choices will be either hire more POCCs or remove mod complex testing from the units. Can you imagine trying to do that? Cath lab can't have their ACT or Avox, ICUs not able to do blood gases, and on it goes. While I agree that some nursing personnel don't really have their hearts in it, the majority of our current TCs understand very well that they need to follow regulations if they want to do testing. And they realize that POCT is a plus for their patients and don't want to lose it.
