Fecal Occult testing

I am currently utilizing the Propper Seracult fecal occult cards for acute GI bleeds.  I have recently learned that this item has been discontinued.  I was going to switch to Hemoccult Sensa Kit but have learned that item has also been discontinued and Beckman Coulter states they do not have a replacement for this.  What is everyone else using beside these two products that they have had good luck with?

Hi Laura,

We use the HemaPrompt FG cards for occult blood testing at the Point of Care.  They are distributed by Aersher.  We like them because all of the reagents are self-contained in the card.  No need for bottles of developer that tend to get misplaced.

We also use HemaPrompt FG. The self-contained reagent is great!

We moved away from the Sensa Occult kits a few years ago to: Sekisui Occult iFOB.
  • no diet restrictions, one test needed only (not 3), far more sensitive and specific to human blood.
We also moved away from having this test out on the floors.  The Sensa developer bottles and cards were every where making it impossible to ensure the staff that was performing the test also had the competency for it.

We use the Hemaprompt cards by Aerscher, LLC.  We use them in the ED's for when docs do the digital exam/specimen collection for blood.
These cards are approved by the manufacturer for specimens collected by digital exam whereas Beckman does not state this in their package insert.  These Hemaprompt cards are approved for testing both fecal and gastric samples

We use HemaPrompt FG cards by Aerscher for fecal and gastric occult blood testing in ED. Can you please share what control material is used for new lot new shipment validation in your hospital? Currently, I am looking for an external QC material which is available in market for this test kit.

We use saved proficiency testing material to QC our new lot/shipments.

Thank you, Deborah, that is a great idea. Is there any expiration date on the proficiency sample?

We use the OC-Light S Fit (Ref # FOB50S) from Polymedco. We distribute the collection device to the floors and ED, but have it sent back to the lab for testing. Results are available in 5 minutes.

Hi Laura,

I'm curious about the discontinuation of the Hemoccult Sensa - is there a letter or website with this information?  I had not heard about this nor has my Micro Supervisor who orders the kits for in house.  It would greatly affect our facility and outlying clinics if they d/c this test.  I tried searching for information on the internet but didn't find anything.

Thanks!

I reached out to our Fisher rep who reached out to their rep with Beckman and they said there is no plan at this time to discontinue the Sensa line.  I'd also be curious who notified you of the discontinuation.

We are looking at the Fisher Healthcare Sure-Vue Occult cards from Fisher. Any comment on this brand? I figure is better than a cartridge kit because most providers employe the digit recovery method.

@Jacqueline Bartlett
After some clarification with my Fisher rep and sales at Beckman Coulter, the single card Hemoccult SENSA will still be available.  We still utilize the 3 card mailers for upper GI bleeds and I was told by both Fisher and sales rep at BC that the 3 card mailers from Beckman Coulter that are being discontinued.

@Elizabeth St. Pierre
My fisher rep informed me that the Fisher Sure Vue is the same product as the ColoScreen by Helena Laboratories.  You might confirm with your rep.  I was concerned with this product because the Coloscreen product has this warning label on its website.  I have not investigated to see if this comes from the card itself or the developer but it concerned enough to go with the Hemoccult SENSA product.

Thank you for the clarification, Laura!

Look at the Hemoccult ICT. It is an immunochemical test (like Hemosure), but it is still a dry card like the Hemoccult Sensa (not a vial of fecal matter). No food/medication restrictions, tests lower GI for human hemoglobin. Great product and easy to use. Available through Fisher, but they will probably have to contact their Beckman rep for support.
