Storage of Lancets and Glucose Strips

I apologize if this topic has been covered, I found a discussion of similar interest but it didn't answer my questions.

Our compliance team is preparing for TJC inspection and are questioning why lancets were in unlocked cabinets and if they counted as sharps. Our answer was immediately yes and they should follow policy for sharps storage.
Their follow-up question was "if strips need to be disposed of in a sharps container, why are they not also being locked up?"

Any insight? We have mostly said they should be disposed in sharps since they have biohazardous material but could also potentially pierce bags. Does anyone else lock up their strips? Are we doing more than necessary requiring a disposal in sharps containers?

Thanks!

We do not lock up our strips or dispose of strips in the sharps because it is not really a "sharps". Yes, it can puncture a bag, but then so can pens and pieces of cardboard. There is such a small volume of sample in each strip...to my understanding...it is not considered infectious/biohazardous.

Good luck in your preparations. Please be sure to let us know if TJC has a different view.

At my sites we do not lock up strips or lancets. As per disposal, for those patients on isolation these may be disposed in the sharps containers.

Glucose testing strips are not classified as "sharps". Sharps are needles, syringes, glassware, etc. Glucose strips are rigid but they should not be discarded in a sharps container. Sharps containers are regulated medical waste that is designed to protect people and prevent injury during disposal handling. Regulated medical waste is also very expensive so I wouldn't recommend filling them up with non-sharp waste.
